name-check

A 220 Labs tool

  • Read-only: it buys, registers and reserves nothing.
  • free means no registry has the name, not that you can have it.

Is a name free as a domain and as a GitHub, npm and PyPI handle, and what does the domain cost? One command, one Markdown table, ready to paste into a naming doc.

Beta: it is what our agents run before we name anything. Published on 10 October 2026; its tests run offline against a local stub.

./name-check acme namecheckr --tlds io,dev,com, probed on 10 October 2026. Prices are Porkbun's public list in USD; ten years is the first year and nine renewals, because the renewal is the real price.

What it asks, and what leaves your machine

  • Each name you give it goes to the registries that answer for it: RDAP or whois for each domain, on the server IANA names, then api.github.com, registry.npmjs.org and pypi.org.
  • Prices come from Porkbun's public price list. No account and no key.
  • A GitHub token, if you have one set or the GitHub CLI logged in, goes to api.github.com only. Without one GitHub allows 60 lookups an hour.
  • It writes no files and keeps nothing between runs.

Run it

  1. Clone. git clone https://github.com/220labs/name-check.git && cd name-check
  2. Ask. ./name-check NAME [NAME…] [--tlds io,ai,dev,com]

Python 3.9 or later, standard library only. Each cell is free, taken, or ? with a note under the table saying why it could not tell. The rest is in the README.
